Most of the people that have money are rarely conscious of people that have less than them. Instead people that have less are most likely to share the few things that they have with others. As you can notice from Baucis and Philemon they don't need to show off what they have and are very proud of their possessions. The people that have been helped by these people are gratified by their actions and will do almost anything to help them as well. "While they gazed with wonder at the sight, and lamented the fate of their neighbors, that old house of theirs was changed into a temple." This was one of the things the couple received from their act of generosity.
People should learn from this myth not only to be generous, but also that love lasts forever. This couple was one that had an excellent relationship, they learned how to accept each other's defects and qualities. They learned how to overcome difficult situations and not to mind their economical position in their society. They decided to ask the gods to die at the same time and to be forever together, this was accomplished. You can most likely achieve what you want when you really want it. They were forever together not as humans, but as trees. Trees can be considered as symbols of eternity, as you can also see them in the myth of Apollo and Daphne and most of the myths that talk about the Dryads. Trees can survive for many years as long as humans don't keep destroying them, and they will always be in hard situations, but they will make it through them.
